Undergoing a tooth extraction, especially a third molar, can be a source of anxiety for many. That said, the procedure itself is only half the journey. A smooth and speedy recovery is reliant on following a precise post-operative care protocol. At our clinic located at 301 Lenox Avenue, Westfield, NJ, Dr. Aristo Carranza and our team are committed to ensuring your recovery experience is as smooth and rapid as possible.
The First 24 Hours: Your Highest Priority
The first day after your extraction are the most critical for setting the stage for a fast recovery. The primary goal is to allow a blood clot to form and stay in the socket, as this is the foundation of the healing process.
-
Apply Gentle Pressure with Gauze: Keep firm, gentle pressure on the gauze pad placed over the extraction site for at least 30-60 minutes after the procedure.
-
Rest and Relax: Refrain from any strenuous activity. Intense activity can increase blood pressure and may lead to renewed bleeding from the extraction site.
-
Avoid Suction: Avoid spitting, using a straw, or smoking. These actions generate negative pressure in the mouth, which can dislodge the crucial blood clot and lead to a dry socket complication.
Managing Swelling and Discomfort
Swelling and discomfort are expected parts of the healing process. Fortunately, you can take effective measures to manage them well.
-
Apply Ice Packs: Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off, for the first day and a half. This is your best tool to reduce swelling.
-
Take Medications as Directed: Adhere to the directions for any prescribed pain relievers or antibiotics. Staying ahead of the discomfort is more effective than managing it once it starts.
What to Eat for a Fast Recovery
What you eat and drink plays a significant role in your recovery.
-
Stick to Soft Foods: For the initial days, consume soft foods and liquids, such as yogurt, smoothies (sipped from a glass), soups, and other pureed foods.
-
Drink Plenty of Fluids: Drink lots of fluids to stay hydrated.
-
Steer Clear Of Spicy and Crunchy Foods: Stay away from hot liquids, crunchy, or spicy foods that could irritate the healing area.
Oral Hygiene After Your Procedure
Keeping your mouth clean is vital to prevent infection, but it must be done carefully.
-
Gentle Rinses: After the first 24 hours, you can begin to gently rinse your mouth with a saline rinse (half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of water) after meals and before bed.
-
Gentle Brushing: Continue to brush your teeth, but be very careful around the extraction site.
