Halifax’s shift– from provider to the sugar isles to haven for the hunted– is evidence that locations can alter their function. Africville, born of exclusion and rich in neighbourhood, is a compass. Into this space came Barbadian migration: ward nurses and schoolteachers, authors and pianists, public servants and professional athletes.
